Her father taught AP Euro, Art & American for 25 years, and she grew up living and breathing AP, as well as achieving fives in all her AP exams. Alexa continued that passion in college, and now brings her years of experience, and love for the subject to her students. Alexa has been tutoring AP US History, AP Language and Composition, AP European History, AP English Literature and AP Art History (and their IB equivalents) in the Los Angeles area for the past seven years. Alexa graduated from Vassar College with a degree in History, and is also a graduate of the International Baccalaureate Program. In her tutoring sessions, Alexa focuses significantly on exam prep, but also dedicates a lot of time to the course itself, as the real value of any AP class should be meeting and surpassing the challenge of a college course.
A graduate of Cornell University and word-smith extraordinaire, Amanda is, perhaps, Quantum’s most popular writing coach. She has helped countless students stand out in their undergraduate, graduate and medical school application essays. Amanda’s students have gone on to attend many elite universities and programs such as Johns Hopkins, The Wharton School of Business MBA program, Cornell University’s Hotel School, and Temple’s Actuarial Science Program, to name only a few. She also tutors the SAT Subject Test in Literature and all levels of High School English. She shares her infectious passion for language and story-telling with students of all ages and interests. The personal statement is her favorite thing to coach. With Amanda, assistance can be in-person, over the phone or through email.
In addition to having a bachelors degree in molecular biology and a masters degree in genetics, Arvin has 13 years experience teaching and tutoring Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics, Physiology and Biology at all levels. He is currently a full time Physics teacher at the esteemed Pilgrim High School in Los Angeles and loves working with Quantum students in the evening and on weekends. He is a College Board-certified AP instructor and has access to some of the best test banks and assignments that can be found which he frequently uses to guide and evaluate his AP students. Additionally, he has written several test prep books and e-books which are available at Barnes and Nobel and Apple’s iBookstore and which continue to sell in the United States and Internationally. He greatly enjoys personalizing each tutoring session according to his client’s personality and learning abilities.
After graduating with the distinction of valedictorian at York Suburban High School in York, PA, Brendan achieved his dream of attending Duke University where he studied biomedical engineering. He went on to obtain a Master of Engineering and Management degree at Case Western Reserve University. The son of two teachers, Brendan enjoys teaching students in math (up to and including Calculus), biology, physics, chemistry, language arts, and history, as well as the complete SAT and ACT exams. His teaching focus is centered on improving the student’s critical thinking and verbal/written communication skills. He loves working with Anna and Quantum’s team of incredible mentors. In his spare time, he enjoys rock climbing, composing and playing music.
After attending Bellarmine Prep – one of the top ranked college preparatory schools in the country – Britt achieved her bachelors in Business Administration from the University of Portland with a double major in Mathematics with Accounting and the Arts. Her intrinsic right-brain/left-brain approach to all subjects is the hallmark of what makes her a meticulous yet creative teacher. She tutors middle and high school aged kids in math (up through and including Algebra II) and language arts as well as the entire SAT, ISEE and HSPT exams. She loves teaching her students time-management and organizational skills that they can utilize for the rest of their education.
Brittney received her bachelors in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale after which was accepted into the prestigious PhD program for Biological Sciences at Fordham University in New York. After spending two years taking graduate biology coursework, teaching undergraduates biology and anatomy, and performing genetics research, Brittney finally found her true passion: using her love of biology to nurture and empower people on a personal level. All of this combined with her own rigorous high school experience (taking six AP courses herself) makes her the perfect AP Biology or AP Chemistry tutor – leading with real world examples, especially from her research career. Brittney has multiple publications in scientific journals, as well as experience presenting her work at conferences and in grant proposals, so she often goes beyond the scientific material and by coaching her students in the art of technical writing. Above all else, she adapts to students’ needs and finds creative ways to teach biological concepts. Her favorite subjects to teach are AP Biology, AP Chemistry and the complete ACT Exam.
A national merit scholar in high school, Chelsea received a full ride to Boston University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2011 (having been on the dean’s list with distinction every semester). In high school she received 4s and 5s on all AP exams and scored in the 99th percentile on the SATS. Her approach to tutoring is simple: she believes any subject can be taught, it’s simply about finding the individual student’s connection to the material. Chelsea brings passion and creativity to every session. She specializes in hummanities, language arts, and math, as well as SAT and ACT prep. A devoted lover of both sci-fi, fantasy and martial arts, outside of tutoring, Chelsea is likely to be found re-reading Frank Herbert’s Dune or working the heavy bag in the dojo.
Christine has five years of tutoring experience in Los Angeles, teaching kids from age 8 to age 18. She is a patient, caring, and funny tutor who is fluent in French. Her mother was born and raised in Paris, and Christine lived there for a semester during college. She taught English as a second language while she was living in France. A Los Angeles native, Christine graduated cum laude from Flintridge Preparatory School, Christine then went to Vassar College, where she was a triple major in Drama, Psychology, and French (graduated with departmental honors in French). Christine scored 800s on both her SAT I Verbal and her SAT II Writing, and a 780 on her SAT II French. She received 5s on her AP tests for English Language and French Language. Christine now tutors both English and French.
Daniel graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. He has 5 years of math and physics tutoring experience ranging from the basic levels to the AP courses and beyond. The teaching strategy he has found to be most effective emphasizes the subject’s fundamentals, which usually leads to clarity in more complex problem solving situations. Daniel has a passion for explaining how the physical world works through math and physics. Besides being knowledgeable, Daniel is motivating, caring, and patient.
Elizabeth graduated from Chapman University with full honors. She majored in English and minored in French. A merit scholar in high school, she published several short stories and received a perfect 800 in both the Writing and Reading Comprehension portion of the SATs. She spent a semester in Normandy, then got a job working as an au pair in Paris in 2010. Elizabeth specializes in creative writing, French language skills and essay composition. She grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii and when she isn’t devouring a book at the beach, she can be found at the Central branch of the LA library, reading and daydreaming.
An Ohio native, James graduated as valedictorian of his high school and then achieved a Bachelors in Atmospheric Science from Ohio State University. With a desire to share his love of science and applied mathematics, he went on to achieve a Masters Degree in Education. He has since been a physical science and computer science teacher for LAUSD for the past 12 years. James loves to incorporate abstract problem-solving skills, data analysis, and visual and audio production into his lessons. He is an affiliate of the ‘Teachers in Space’ organization as well as an AREE NASA educator, and a Honeywell Space Academy Participant. He infuses in all of his students a passion for the New Generation Science Standards of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. James also teaches computer science with a focus on HTML, CSS, Java, C#, and UX Design through virtual reality platforms. His approach to effective learning incorporates practical modeling, visual sketches, auditory cues, and fundamental breakdown. In addition to teaching physics, math, and computer science, James enjoys performing music around LA and writing film scores.
Jeffrey brings eight years of comprehensive experience in education to Quantum Tutors. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Vassar and a Master’s of Education from Vanderbilt University. He also holds a secondary education certificate in English Language and Literature and worked as a high school teacher in upstate New York. He specializes in language arts and social sciences, including American and European history, and has worked with students of all age ranges. In High School, he received 5s on his AP-USH and AP-Lit exams and loves teaching students how to excel in these college level courses. Additionally, Jeffrey has a background in college admissions and offers sessions to help high school juniors and seniors develop and refine personal statements as well as interview skills.
Jordan is a highly requested SAT/ACT tutor and coach. He is a graduate of USC and has been tutoring the SAT for several years. He holds an almost 100% success rate in raising his students’ scores. In the 2015-2016 school year, Jordan worked with over 25 Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors all of whose scores went up – some as much as 500 points. He prides himself on having an in-depth approach to tutoring the SAT and ACTand tailoring his teaching method to the individual student in order to help your child reach his or her full potential. Over the years, Jordan has helped many students with test anxiety, as well as those who tend to under-perform on standardized tests. After achieving honor roll status during all four years of high school, Kaila earned a BS in Criminal Justice and Criminal Science. While in college, she began tutoring elementary and middle school kids and has continued working with those age levels ever since. Kaila knows that each student is unique, and her background in forensics has spurned her fascination with creating specific methods of tutoring that fit each of her students’ particular needs. She joined the Quantum Team over a year ago and specializes in test prep for the ACT, SAT and ISEE Exam (lower, middle and upper). Beyond that, she also tutors English, math (through Algebra and Geometry) with an incredible track record, chemistry and history. Teachers often remark on the difference a few sessions with Kaila make on a student’s test scores. Kaila is warm, likable, communicative and organized, and she comes in to every session with a plan.
Kapil recently finished his undergrad at USC’s Marshall School of Business, where he graduated magna cum laude from the International Relations & Global Business Program. Kapil hails from the Bay Area, where he started his tutoring career 5+ years ago. He specializes in SAT/ACT Preparation, math through Algebra II, College Essay Editing, and all levels of English (including AP Lit and AP Language and Comp). He believes in creating a fun, positive, and process (not result) oriented working environment, which will allow each student to enjoy learning the concepts and get excited about the work. While Kapil is a proud, self-proclaimed nerd, he spends most of his free time rocking out in an 80s cover band, writing comedy routines for his stand-up, and shooting hoops with his best friends. Fun fact: Both Apple Inc. and Kapil’s tutoring career started in a garage in Cupertino, CA. No one else believes this mysterious coincidence to be as incredible as Kapil does.
Kate caught the teaching bug in high school when, as a member of the National Honor Society, she began tutoring her fellow students in Pre-Calc while she herself was being introduced to the concepts. After scoring in the 700s on all sections of the SAT, Kate went on to receive her degree from the University of Miami. After moving to Los Angeles, Kate became a professional writer and an accomplished tutor. She not only tutors all subjects K-12 and test preparation, but also worked for the past six years as a ghost-writer for scholarly researchers and for SEO companies. In addition, Kate has successfully aided many seniors with their college admissions essays and has taught enrichment programs in Group Tutoring and Zome Tools for Star Education. She also specializes in ACT Preparation and has helped Quantum Students raise their scores. Kate is very enthusiastic and has a knack for making learning fun and engaging.
Katie holds a degree in Honors Economics and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University (12′) and enjoys working with students regardless of learning differences, test-anxiety, or educational achievements. Along with tutoring, she has a diverse and impressive professional background in finance, research, operations management, and education. She is an extremely versatile tutor that enjoys working with students on the ISEE, SSAT, ACT, SAT, GRE, TOEFL,Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Psychology. When she’s not tutoring, Katie is an active mental health advocate,working as a crisis intervention volunteer at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services and Crisis Text Line. She aspires to become a clinical psychologist and researcher, supporting children and adolescents who struggle with depression and anxiety.
Katie is a compassionate and caring tutor who specializes in working with elementary and middle school students. She was born and raised in Northern California, where she graduated from high school summa cum laude. She achieved her bachelors with a perfect 4.0 GPA from Stanford University in 2001. During her time at Stanford, she tutored incoming freshmen in SLE– Structured Liberal Education, a year-long great works program that integrated the English, History, Classics and Philosophy Departments. Katie then went on to receive her MFA from UCSD, where she taught Public Speaking in order to fund her education. Since then, Katie has continued working one on one with students and has grown particularly fond of teaching ISEE Test Prep, English, Algebra, Geometry and Spanish. She loves working with Quantum kids!
With dual bachelors degrees in international relations and economics from the University of Bogota Columbia, Luisa moved to the US and went on to attain dual masters degrees in French and Spanish Languages from Dickinson College. For the past decade she has had long standing teaching, tutoring and curriculum design positions at the Ribet Academy in Los Angeles and with Nickelodeon’s Young Variety specials. Luisa tutors Spanish at all levels – including AP and both SAT Spanish Subject tests. Teaching languages is Luisa’s lifelong passion. She loves sharing her passion for languages with Quantum’s students.
Mary Rachel Gardner graduated magna cum laude from USC with a major in the Arts and a double minor in Business and Film Production. She graduated from high school with a 4.5 GPA making the dean’s list each year for high honors. After working as a nanny throughout high school and college, Mary Rachel successfully transitioned to tutoring three years ago. She currently tutors a wide array of students between the ages of 5 and 15 in English, Math and Science. While she aims to make learning fun, Mary Rachel endeavors to instill an inspired, organized and focused work ethic in each of her students. Her motto is, “Let’s work hard first. And, you can reward yourself with fun and games after!”
Nancy has four years of tutoring experience in Los Angeles, teaching students from high school through college level. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from MIT, where her studies included mathematics, physics, and computer science. She’s conducted research projects in quantum computation at MIT’s Quanta Lab, as well as in particle physics at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Her background in science has taught her the importance of understanding complex topics in small, manageable steps first, as well as the importance of care and attention to detail. She enjoys focusing on the student’s specific challenges and then finding ways to help the student tackle the material. She finds it rewarding to try different approaches and then watch a student come to understand and own the material. Her favorite subjects are Chemistry, Calculus, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus.
Natalie’s first passion lies in languages. She is fluent in Spanish, French (and Gaelic!) and also speaks conversational German. Natalie studied in the University of Valencia in Spain and lived for many years in both Spain and Switzerland. With a Bachelors Degree in International Marketing and Languages from the prestigious Dublin City University, She brings her love of all middler and high subjects and positive coaching style to Quantum’s SAT prep students – in Verbal, Writing and Math. Natalie has taught and tutored many students both in Europe and Los Angeles and innately understands how to get the best out of each individual student. She is extremely conscientious, dedicated and friendly and works closely with each student, guiding him or her through improvement in both grades and confidence on all levels. She loves working with Quantum Kids.
As a graduate of Campbell Hall, Nina knows the intricate academic and social landscape of LA’s private schools like the back of her hand, making her excellent all-around tutor for middle and high school students looking for support in all their classes. She graduated high school as a member of the Cum Laude Society, the Head of the Poetry Society and her class’ recipient for the Book Award in English, and further enriched her knowledge of, and passion for, the English language by earning her bachelor’s degree in English at Amherst College. Her aptitude for learning romance languages on the fly, as well as her love of Old and Middle English poetry and the English Cannon, come in handy when tutoring the language arts and essay composition. Her patience, humor and genuine care for the success and well-being of her students create a balanced learning environment that is supportive, creative and specifically tailored to the individual. Petey graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University with a B.A. in English and Art History. He comes from Westport, CT, where he tutored students from Connecticut and neighboring New York in a variety of subjects. He instructs all levels of English through AP Language Comp and AP Literature, math through PreCalculus, AP Biology, AP Art History, all history classes, and all levels of Social Studies through AP Government. Petey also helped formulate Quantum’s one-of-kind, comprehensive and in-depth New SAT study materials (Math and English). In his free time, he writes, watches 90s sitcoms, and reads Scandinavian crime fiction.
Robert has always enjoyed math. As a kid – he even spent a summer at Math camp! In high school he continued to excel at Mathematics as well as History, Chemistry and Economics. Robert attended Georgetown University where he received his B.S. in Business administration with an emphasis on Marketing and Management of Human resources. After university, Robert coached middle school and high school teams in New York and soon began tutoring his players who were struggling to keep up. He now brings his motivational and positive coaching style to Quantum’s SAT prep students – in Verbal, Writing and Math – and continues to teach upper mathematics (Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus) as well. He believes in and cares about each of his students and is committed to helping them reach their full potential!
Ryan has 4 years experience in helping students with all math subjects from Pre-Algebra all the way to Calculus AB. He was born and raised in Sacramento, California and came Los Angeles to attend UCLA with a major in Statistics. Ryan scored 800 on his SAT Math exam, a 36 on his ACT math exam and a 790 on his SAT Subject Test Math 2C exam. He also scored 5s on his AP Statistics and AP Calc AB and BC exams. But, don’t expect Ryan to be standing in the corner with his nose in a book! He is out-going, friendly, and approachable, and he devotes most of his free time to photography and basketball. He loves teaching tricks and tips that will help students find math fun. Ryan is a one of a kind, enthusiastic tutor that aims to, not only help his students, but make sure they are reaching their full potential!
One of our most inspiring tutors, Sam entered UCLA with a scholarship in Recognition of Academic Excellence and graduated at the top of his class receiving a (Pre-Med) B.S. in Biology with a 3.95 GPA and highest honors. He has recently been admitted to the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine on full scholarship, where he plans on studying neurosurgery. Sam has over five years of tutoring and teaching experience and specializes in tutoring Biology, Chemistry and Physics at regular, honors and AP levels. He has become very good at tailoring his tutoring to best fit the student’s needs, personality, and aspirations – and he takes great pleasure in helping students realize their full potential by seeing their grades and test scores improve significantly. Sam bases his success as a tutor on his ability to not only simplify complex material, but also ease a students stress when approaching schoolwork. After graduating top ten in her high school class (including six unweighted AP classes), Sara went on to graduate cum laude from Northwestern University, with a double-major in Education and Social Policy and Bassoon Studies. She’s a Montessori-trained educator, and has spent the past decade designing engaging and interactive curriculum for elementary/middle/high school school students in writing, storytelling, and more. Sarais now a non-profit administrator and professional political writer with a particular passion for this upcoming generation of young voices. Sara‘s tutoring style: she’s warm, funny, and likes to create games out of studying. She believes learning should be a joyful, creative experience, and she works very hard to learn what excites each student.
Every one loves Sean. Growing up in a family of educators has given Sean a love of teaching and literacy. She began early, at the age of 15, working with the children of her mother’s Pre-School and continued throughout her time at university, graduating early and Suma Cum Laude. Immediately after her degree, Sean began teaching 4th grade. She then taught 1st, 7th and 8th grades before returning to school herself for advanced study in literature. Sean was awarded by the EIRC and ETTC for her creative and integrative lesson plans and has a gift for motivating and engaging students. She has an infectious passion for all elementary school subjects – social studies, math, reading, writing and overall learning – that is sure inspire any student.
After graduating from Greenwich Academy, one of the oldest and most respected preparatory schools in the nation, Stephanie attended Connecticut College and attained her bachelors with a double major in government and sociology and a minor in anthropology. This fall of 2015 will mark her 10th year as a beloved full time teacher at The Village School in the Pacific Palisades and her 8th year teaching her annual after-school course, Mastering the ISEE. In her spare time, Stephanie loves working one-on-one with middle school students and helping them achieve a higher score on the LL, ML and UL ISEE exams.
Steve is an Advanced Placement history teacher with 18 years experience in New York City schools, where his students scored well above state and national averages on AP US History, AP World History and AP European History exams. He brings to tutoring a talent for identifying individual student needs regarding the content and skills assessed on AP exams, and developing specific strategies to ensure each student’s success. Steve is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and holds a Master’s Degree in history from Boston University, as well as a Master’s in Education from Fordham.
Summera has been tutoring for five years and loves interacting with students on a one-on-one basis. Straightforward and funny, Summera specializes in motivating struggling students who find her extremely relatable. She graduated with Honors from UCLA, where she was Historian of the Agathai Chapter of the Mortar Board National Honor Society. She has a passion for teaching literature, creative writing, history and general organization skills. Furthermore, her years of experience with the ISEE curriculum has taught her how to explain math to right brained kids. She also enjoys tutoring French and editing essays – particularly personal statements for college applications. Summera’s favorite kids are Quantum kids!
Taner holds a BS in Civil Engineering, an MBA with an emphasis in Finance and an MA in teaching Mathematics K-12. Since 2006, he has been the Math Department Chair at a private high school while continuing to teach Mathematics classes at all levels, including Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC. He is passionate about mathematics and has earned stellar student evaluations every year. Since 2011, all of his AP Calculus BC classes have passed the AP test with the highest possible score of 5. In 2014, all 18 of his AP Calculus AB students passed the AP test with a score of 5. He is a proud recipient of Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award. Having extensive teaching experience in both classroom and one on one, he easily adapts to different learning styles of students and helps them achieve their goals. He is truly dedicated and deeply gifted.
Toby is exactly the kind of well-rounded tutor and person Quantum loves to hire; she is a responsible, warm, bright and knowledgeable young woman – with clear and facile communications skills. Since graduating from Syracuse University and heading west four years ago, Toby has gained experience teaching a variety of subjects and general study skills to middle and high school students in and around Los Angeles. She is also a writer and published poet. In fact, by the age of twenty-four, she had already had five poems published in five different literary magazines. Ironically, though, Toby most adores teaching Algebra and Chemistry. She loves sharing her passion for numbers, formulas, experiments and the make-up of the universe with her students. Her ultimate goal as a tutor is to make complex numbers that are used in math and science applicable to everyday situations.
